How to Determine the Size of Your Pool

When adding chemicals or water to the pool, it is convenient to know is the number of gallons your pool will hold. Because pool chemicals are added based on the amount of water in the pool, knowing the size of your pool can be useful information.

Pool size isn’t measured in feet, it’s measured in gallons.

Simply knowing the number of gallons by itself isn’t enough to set up a chemical treatment plan for your pool, but it’s a start. It’s also affected by several other variables: how much sun the pool gets, the number of contaminants introduced, either by swimmers, wind, leaves, etc. Water quality is also a consideration. The type of pool construction matters: whether it’s a concrete, fiberglass, vinyl-lined.

Calculating pool size

But, before chemicals are introduced into the pool, knowing how many gallons a pool holds is an excellent place to start. Many chemicals are added per thousand gallons, meaning you need to know how many gallons you have before you can understand how much to add.

Calculating by configuration

To calculate the number of gallons in a pool, you’ll need a measuring tape and probably a helper to hold the free end. The following is a list of common pool shapes and the math formula for estimating the number of gallons in a pool. These are based on pools have straight sides.

Round

If your pool is round, multiply the number of feet across by itself, multiply that number by the depth, and then multiply the result by 5.9.

Rectangle

Multiply the length by the width in feet, and then multiply that number by the average depth (also in feet). Multiply your answer by 7.5

Oval

Multiply the longest length by the longest width. Multiply that answer by the average depth, and then multiply your answer by 5.9.

Odd shapes should be calculated using appropriately portioned smaller sections which resemble those listed above, then adding the totals together. So, for example, if you have an L-shaped pool, calculate it as two rectangles. If you
