The Importance of Pool Filters

Adequate water circulation, proper chemical balance, and regular maintenance are all key to having a functional, clean, and visually appealing pool

Adequate water circulation, proper chemical balance, and regular maintenance are all key to having a functional, clean, and visually appealing pool. However, these factors will only become relevant if the pool filter does its job.

This post discusses the three basic types of pool filters and their importance.

Types of pool filters

There are three basic types of pool filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE) filters.

Sand filters are the standard and can often be found in older pools. These filters feature a tank full of sand that traps dirt, debris, and leaves. The impurities remain in the filter until the system gets backwashed and the filtered water returns to the pool.

Cartridge filters clean the water using cartridges. The water runs through the cartridges and reaches the center core, where the folds grab the dirt and debris. Then, cartridges send the filtered water back into the pool without backwashing.

DE filters feature grids coated with DE powder that collects even the smallest impurities. Unfortunately, these filters require backwashing, during which a certain amount of the powder gets lost, so homeowners need to add more to recharge them.

Saving energy

Many homeowners believe pool filters consume a lot of energy. The reality is that it depends on the filter. Different types of pool filters can decrease energy bills compared to others. For example, cartridge filters require less energy to operate than other types of pool filters. These filters eliminate the backwashing process that consumes a lot of energy.

Additionally, cartridge filters are efficient at removing smaller particles and dirt and are easy to maintain.

Cleaning the water

The primary purpose of pool filters is to keep the water in the pool clean. Pool filters collect dirt, dust, debris, leaves, bugs, and other impurities. Pool filters also collect bacteria and algae that could jeopardize the water quality and make it unsafe.

Reduced stress on other pool equipment

Think of pool equipment as symbiosis. When one part isn't working correctly, other parts have to work harder to compensate, which often results in malfunctioning. For example, pool filters are an essential part of pool equipment that supports the pool pump's proper functioning and other filtering system components.

When pool filters aren't doing their job, the pump becomes overwhelmed with dirty water and could break down.

Well-maintained filters are essential for a healthy and safe pool and the remaining parts of the whole filtering system.

Call the pros

Pool filters are like the lungs of a pool. They're a vital part of pool equipment that ensures the pool water is clean and safe. Homeowners who want to ensure their filters are in optimal condition should contact professionals. Pool experts can recommend the best filters, conduct regular maintenance, and, if necessary, repair potential issues.
