Seasonal Pool Care Tips

Being a pool owner means having a little vacation spot right in the backyard without having to leave the house.

Being a pool owner means having a little vacation spot right in the backyard without having to leave the house. Yet, for all its benefits, this relaxing oasis is also a responsibility.

Luckily, there are a few ways to adapt the pool care routine to every season and make pool maintenance more consistent. Here are some of them:

Spring

Spring is the time to open the pool to the world after winter. Slowly and carefully remove pool covers to avoid dumping the debris from the cover into the pool. Give everything a good clean – from the water’s surface to the pool’s bottom.

It’s also the perfect time to test the water’s alkaline and chlorine levels. If any of these values are imbalanced, try to adjust them to hit the ideal ranges for clean and skin-friendly water. Before the season gets too far, check the filters, pumps, heaters, and any other equipment.

Summer

Summer is the prime time for pool use, which means it needs more cleaning than any other part of the year. Skim it daily and vacuum it weekly. Also, clean filters as soon as they start to accumulate debris.

Keep an eye on the chemicals during summer. The more they are used, the more likely they will get off balance. Test the water and adjust the chemicals whenever necessary so algae and bacteria stay out of the pool.

Summers are hot, which means much faster water evaporation, which can lower the water level. Keep it topped up so the pump and filter work as they should.

Autumn

Leaves begin to fall in autumn and can drop into the pool, too. Keep them at bay by skimming and using a pool cover, especially later in the season, to keep it clean. A quality cover will remove debris and reduce water loss while protecting from freezing later in the year.

Those living in cooler climates and closing their pool off for winter should balance the water in autumn and add a winterizing chemical kit to keep it stable.

Winter

Winter may be the season that requires the least pool maintenance, but the pool still shouldn’t be forgotten. Check on the pool periodically throughout the winter, especially after heavy snow or rain. Clean the snow off the cover because accumulated snow could harm it.

Those who shut their pool down should store removable equipment like pumps and filters to keep them dry and safe.

Winter is also a great time to plan for pool upgrades and repairs before pool season returns.

Maximize the pool season

It’s not too hard to keep a pool pristine year-round. All it takes is adjusting the routine and knowing how each season affects it. Talk to a pool expert for more tips and perhaps to schedule effective professional maintenance.
