Pool Safety Tips

Rough play can cause drowning accidents, especially with younger children.

At the start of summer weather, swimming becomes a regular activity for parents and children. But regardless of whether a residential pool or a swimming facility is used, if parents can’t always supervise during the swim, children must adhere to these tips for their safety.

Here are some pool safety tips for all to follow:

Always walk, don’t run

This is the most important tip. Children should never run beside a swimming pool as they can easily slip on the wet concrete and get seriously injured.

Don’t dive into the shallow end

Children must only dive from designated spots. Also, they should never dive into an above-ground pool. Diving injuries can cause permanent damage.

No rough playing

Rough play can cause drowning accidents, especially with younger children. Ensure children do not play dangerous games like holding each other underwater and jumping on others.

Don’t play around with drains or covers

Pool covers, drains, and suctions can be hazardous regardless of whether they’re adequately equipped, so children should stay away from these. Young children too small to break away can get trapped and struck by suctions or drains. Pool owners should regularly inspect their covers and drains to ensure they function adequately.

Never swim alone

No one should swim alone, especially children, who shouldn’t be left unsupervised, regardless of their swimming capabilities. Most drowning incidents often occur when a child has been left alone.

Obey pool rules and listen to instructions

Most public pools have different rules concerning conduct and play in the pool, including toys and attire. Follow the pool rules to ensure children’s safety.

Wear effective sunscreen

Children and adults should wear appropriate swimwear and apply sunscreen when swimming outdoors.

Maintain pool safety equipment

All pool equipment has to be well-maintained and readily available for proper use when needed. Also, pool safety equipment must never be used as toys.

When storms threaten, get out of the pool

When a storm threatens, lightning may suddenly strike regardless of the absence of rain or dark skies. Children should immediately leave the pool and take cover for at least 30 minutes after seeing lightning or hearing thunder.

Learn how to respond during an emergency

Caregivers, parents, and older children should learn basic first aid and CPR, and a phone should always be available to make urgent calls. Children should contact an adult immediately if anyone is experiencing difficulty in the water.

Always be cautious

Swimming is one of life’s many pleasures. Aside from the above tips, maintenance is essential to enjoy a safe, clean swimming pool. If a homeowner is unsure about their pool’s safety, they should contact a professional pool maintenance service provider for an inspection.
