How to Ensure Water Safety in a Home Pool or Spa

Most children are naturally drawn to water and have a great time playing in it. However, they can also sustain injuries during their playtime. Even if they know how to swim, kids face many dangers in the water if no precautions are taken. For this reason, homeowners should pay special attention to water safety in their home pool or spa.

This article lists several measures to protect children from dangers associated with home pools and spas.

How can water safety in a pool or spa be higher?

Here’s how to ensure that children can swim and play safely in a pool or spa:

Supervise and learn CPR

Children mustn’t be left unsupervised near a hot tub, pool, or other bodies of water. For instance, adult swimmers can take turns looking after the children during gatherings and be on the lookout for accidents.

An important detail is to avoid alcohol while supervising the children to remain fully focused and react promptly.

Children of four or younger should be kept at arm’s length, regardless of their swimming ability. Also, don’t rely solely on air-filled toys, such as inner tubes, noodles, and water wings to keep kids safe.

In case accidents happen, parents should be able to administer CPR.

Teach kids to swim

If there are plans to add a pool or spa to the house, teach the kids how to swim. Most four-year-olds and older youngsters are already capable of swimming, whereas younger children usually have a more challenging time, depending on their development level.

Nonetheless, supervision is the best defense, and teaching children how to swim shouldn’t be the only safety measure taken.

Put up a fence

Many people decide to install a fence around the pool. The fence should be a minimum of four feet long, and it shouldn’t obstruct the view of the pool area from the outside. The gaps on the vertical slats should be no wider than four inches, and the distance between the fence and the ground should be four inches at most.

Furthermore, don’t build fences children can climb. Add self-latching and self-closing gates that open away from the pool and out of reach for children.

Check the spa or pool cover

Make sure that the spa or pool cover is in good condition. If there are any defects, repair them or buy a new cover as soon as possible.

Stay alert

Having a pool or spa in the house adds a lot of pleasure and entertainment to every family member. However, it also comes with a risk, which is why taking these measures is necessary. After all, the safety of the children is what matters most.
