A Quick Guide to Choosing the Best Pool Equipment

A pool is a significant investment. It makes sense to want to ensure it lasts as long as possible and use it safely.

An essential part of that is choosing the best pool equipment, especially the pump and filter, as they will allow the entire system to work more efficiently and clean the pool. To pick suitable models, here are a few considerations to keep in mind:

Consider the size of the pool

Everything starts with taking accurate measurements of your pool. However, figuring out the correct size of the pool will look a little different depending on its shape. Fortunately, homeowners can rely on these useful formulas:

  • Round pool: Diameter (feet) x Diameter (feet) x Average Depth (feet) x 5.9 = Pool capacity (gallons)

  • Oval pool: Length (feet) x Width (feet) x Average Depth (feet) x 6.7 = Pool capacity (gallons)

  • Rectangular pool: Length (feet) x Width (feet) x Average Depth (feet) x 7.5 = Pool capacity (gallons)

Regardless of your pool’s shape, you will know how much water it can hold.

Calculate the minimum flow rate

The water in the pool should make a total circulation every eight hours or so. It is why it’s essential to understand the minimum flow rate, which is :

Flow Rate = Pool Volume in Gallons ÷ Turnover Rate in Minutes

Getting the rate right will help with choosing the pool pump.

Choose the right pump

Picking the best pool pump shouldn’t be a rushed decision. First, the minimum flow rate is just that – the minimum.

Ideally, the pool pump should have a flow rate somewhere between the minimum and maximum flow rate.

Furthermore, homeowners have to be mindful of any regulations about pool pumps in their areas. Often smaller single-speed pumps may not be up to code, making it necessary to replace them with a dual-speed or variable speed pump.

Choose the right filter

The three types of pool filters include sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth. Most people use sand filters because they’re the cheapest, easy to maintain, and can last up to seven years before they need to be changed.

Cartridge filters prevent water waste but don’t last as long. Finally, diatomaceous earth is the most expensive but provides the most superior filtration.

Keep your pool efficient with the best equipment

Without proper maintenance, any pool would eventually deteriorate. While cleaning the pool and using the appropriate chemicals is vital, that’s only part of it. The right pump and filter can make your pool a source of fun and enjoyment for many years to come.
